My T-shirt. Come nasce?
Tu come ti definisci? Stilista, artista, imprenditore?
Sbarcherete all’estero?
Dalla PE2012, sarà possibile trovare My T-Shirt anche all’estero, ma di questo daremo notizie più precise durante Pitti Uomo a gennaio prossimo.

A serious fashion blog can not avoid speaking about the Italian phenomenon of the moment, in the field of t-shirts: My T-shirt, the brand (along with Happiness) wich has guessed the right formula: a product with an extremely attractive price, both at wholesale, as for the final customer (a t-shirt costs the public around 27-29 euros), but with very appealing graphics. Even the fabric, slub cotton, has helped to make them recognizable. Through word of mouth of shops My T-shirt have experienced a real boom in recent months. The brand has broken (a little ‘as it did Cheap Monday jeans at the time breaking the denim world with a 55 euros product), the barrier of 30 euros, without losing appeal. We interviewed Tomas Lanza, creative and artistic designer who works at My T-shirt, to learn about the history and development of the brand.
How is My T-shirt born? What is the history, the idea, the intuition behind the brand?
The brand is the brainchild of a couple of years ago which has then been made in 2010. I wanted to make my way to be disrespectful and I did featuring the icons of our time, figures from fashion, film and music. I started from Marilyn and Jim Morrison to come up with Lady Gaga and Kate Moss, Karl Lagerfeld and through Einstein. On everyone I have placed a beautiful red nose clown and I applied a “little” makeup . From this concept starts the brand’s philosophy, “Life is a Circus.” I think the world of the circus is a perfect metaphor for life, is the realm of opposites and contrasts, is the only place in the world where the sequins dance on sawdust. Through the irreverence of my t-shirt I like to have a conflicting impact, I like to hear people compliment you because they managed to make her smile and those that are caught up in what they see as critical in a sense of seeing disfigured untouchable people. In all cases, this is the cool part of the job, and the reaction of people waiting for the next t-shirt. It ‘nice to meet people that you propose to work on this or that character, you’ve struck their imagination. This is fantastic.
Who are the people behind the project?
The people involved in the project are mainly 5. I am in charge of the creative and style, Fabio Fabbri is the entrepreneur behind the project which also deals with the production through his company, then there are Filippo Gallorini and Marcello Ghelli that make up the marketing department and finally Emanuela Crescentini who follows everything that passes through the web and social networks.
Tomas, I saw that you’re a talented graphic designer. How do you define yourself? Designer, artist, entrepreneur? What ‘s your background?
I define myself “creative in progress”, which is open to all imaginable stimuli. In fact I do not have an academic background well-defined. Apart from the fact that I passed throught the Academy of Fine Arts, I believe that being creative now resides in the fact to steal ideas in all that we have from the newspaper. A key part, however, is in going to look for ideas outside the usual sphere, for this step I pass several weeks a year around between Milan, London and Berlin, which I have always considered cities full of surprises and creative urges. Years ago I lived in Los Angeles and as I arrived they just gave me a promotional t-shirt for a hostel in Santa Monica with printed on: “You can not understand the world if you do not see it with your eyes.” Well, I think in that sentence is a little enclosed my passion of discovering, the curiosity that animates my work every day. A designer has to be driven by a strong passion for research and have to see, as I said, with his own eyes to understand and reinterpret in a personal way.
Do you realize that My T-shirt had a big impact on the market? And your brand will be remembered as the one that has revolutionized the market for t-shirts?
Until recently I did not really do much of this thing, then, as I said, you go into a bar or shop and find the people who stop you and ask you what you are working on, they give you ideas, you ask them wich character should become Circus. From this I began to understand that we have a great success and the real revolution is that to get closer to My T-Shirt are teenagers, as well as the woman super fashion and griffe-lover who sees in My T-Shirt absolutely a must to have in ‘closet. As I said, now comes the hard part, and the confirmation of the success season after season. To date we are still gearing up, judging by the number of retailers that require the collection. Let’s hope so ….
How will the brand evolve? As the name itself says, will you only produce t-shirt or or will you evolve in other items such as sweatshirts, pants, bags and so on?
The t-shirt is still the reference, although we are working on an expansion of products to be included in collections such as sweatshirts, pants and accessories. But when I think of my client, I think he always expect a new t-shirt rather than another thing. There are many brands that develop from the t-shirt a total look, but honestly, I think we end up losing sight of the simple T-shirt, which ultimately is the product that gives recognition and success. So, yes to an enlargement of the line, but still firm to the fact that most of my work is to create new t-shirt, fit and perhaps also working on several cuts and, perhaps, expanding the brand to the market of the child
Will you sell abroad?
Abroad, we are already arriving, having concluded agreements with distributors across Europe, USA, Canada, Brazil and China. From ss 2012, you will find My T-Shirt abroad, but this we will give more precise information during Pitti Uomo in January.
