Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli, creative directors of Valentino fashion house since 2007 (the year when the great designer decided to leave the reins of his empire), chose Steve McCurry to make the shots of spring/summer 2016 campaign.
Best known for his work at National Geographic (historical the cover of June 1985, the “Afghan Girl”) and universally recognized as one of the most important contemporary photographers, Curry commented his work for the Italian fashion house: “The idea of these pictures is to take the viewer on a journey. The clothes were inspired by African motifs, so to take the shoot to Africa and show how these things interact and, this connection of the clothes, the models, the environment, the local people; I thought it was a great endeavor.”
Shots with rich colors, stunning landscapes, images that perfectly reflects both the mood of the collection and American photographer style.
All very nice, especially when the models, the luxury clothing and bags from a few thousand euro dialogue with its surroundings, when the conflict arises between the Valentino’s woman and nature.
But when this woman joins the native warriors, to the true African clothes and houses in raw land, it seems that Curry invite us to make a critical reflection on what is the real relationship between the fashion industry and the reality from which comes the inspiration for this collection.
Some have called these shots a masterpiece, others blasphemy, what do you think?
