Many designers are considering sustainability as priority, abandoning sumptuous set designs and aiming to clean and minimalistic lines, suggestive lighting and recycled materials.
Let’s see together the top 5 sustainable catwalk sets of the latest fashion weeks.
Ermenegildo Zegna
Let’s start with an excellence of the italian design: Ermenegildo Zegna.
The artistic director Alessandro Sartori thought his latest collection as “the rebirth of tailoring”, in order to approach the generations that have never wore it. Zegna is pursuing his objective of reducing to zero the waste. He already reconverted his already-existent laboratories in material recycling workshops, he proposed regenerated cashmere garments and wool jackets woven in San Patrignano. Because of this, #UseTheExisting is a perfect name for the new collection.
The fashion house has also showed its garments in a peculiar setting, an ex foundry in the suburbs of Milan. What made the location unique, is the impressive installation “Art for Earth” constructed by the american artist Anne Patterson. Created thanks to the recycle of unsold pieces’s fabrics of the brand, the installation has perfectly framed the collection, recalling again the attention for a recurring topic: the regeneration of materials.

Holzweiler
From Copenhagen, Holzweiler has presented a ready-to-wear more dynamic and fashionable, always maintaining alive its athleisure dna. For sure, this year has celebrated the nature, taking it as inspiration both for the collection and for the set design: a glass tunnel realized by the international studio Snohetta, that has hosted inside a mix of nordic plants.
The minimal set was then reused inside the showroom and for the pop-up store Holzweiler.

Gabriela Hearst
Gabriela Hearst imposed herself an important objective and she reached it: create a successful collection, entirely realized with wasted materials. Her point of strength is the textile development, rigorously in earth shades. “Repurpose with Purpose”, the FW 2020/21 collection, maintain the focus on the textile and material’s recycle, underlining the importance of reinventing already-existing and overabundance stock. Talking about the set design, very basic and composed by bale entirely made by mince paper (and recycled!). With this catwalk, she has surely elevated the status of sustainable luxury brand.

Kenzo
The maison Kenzo has welcomed its new portuguese designer Felipe Oliveira Baptista. His debut in the FW 2020/21 with the “Going places” collection, didn’t go unnoticed: he showed a different vision of the brand, switching to a more luxury and minimalistic look. Between natural palettes, camouflage prints and “painting dresses”, what has fascinated the most is the location’s choice for his show.
The setting consists in a tubular transparent structure, thought as “nomadic modular object”: in fact, it’ll be reused in other forms for the next season’s events, presentations and pop-up stores. Designed in collaboration with Bureau Betak, the main goal was the reusing; moreover, the french company specialized in the realization of dream catwalks, has recently announced a route change toward an eco-conscious production.

Giorgio Armani
Last but not least, the menswear catwalk by Giorgio Armani, “Impressioni tattili”, enhance the lightness of the garments, embracing and exalting who wears it.
Talking about the set design, it completely reflects the collection and designer’s aesthetic: it includes ice sculptures made by recycled plexiglas, which were previously used in its windows display. Everything surrounded by a suggestive total black atmosphere. What’s more sustainable than the reuse?
