Sanchez Kane SS19 #1
“Italy for me means the beginning of my creative world, it’s the place where I learned that beauty manifests itself in different ways, it’s my school”. This is how Barbara Sánchez Kane, a Mexican-born fashion designer, former student of Polimoda in Florence, begins her career. And if the Bel Paese is the start of her zeitgeist as a designer, Margiela and the experimental fashion of the Nineties, they are the aesthetic point of view. To which she add art, inspiring not only the style but also the way in which Kane presents the collections of her brand SÁNCHEZ-KANE, founded in 2016, that is, through installations or performances.
Barbara, what is the idea of fashion behind your SÁNCHEZ-KANE brand and is it your vision that brought you to found it?
SÁNCHEZ-KANE started two years ago as to make my thoughts tangible. It is a medium of expression that I invite all the misfits to levitate with me.

You have studied at Polimoda. Which aspects contribute to explaining this kind of school and what, instead, an emerging designer learns in the field?
I think its the school and the city is in contribute to you creative process and influence your work and way you approach your designs.
You’re Mexican, but you’ve shown in York for three seasons. Your intent is to bring the aesthetic traits of fashion typical of your country to the world. Given the recent political news, which still see the borders, not just geographic, between the two countries in question, what do you think is the role of the sector in which you work? Can a creative act really make people aware of certain issues?
Fashion has always been use for political reason we can see the restart of the french economy with Dior or what the mini skirt did to the women movement.

You define your collections as installations, thus going beyond the concept of presenting only clothes on a catwalk. What relationship do you have with contemporary art and what aspects of it do you find in your latest collection, Macho Sentimental?
I think there is no division between non of them. I get very inspired by artist like Ana Mendieta and you can see a lot of references about Frida Khalo and Diego Rivera love and destructive relationship.
Among the historical brands, which are those with which you have more affinity, in terms of style?
Martin Margiela and Walter Van Beirendonck.

In Milan we can find some of your selected pieces at Grand Tour Studio: what is your target audience?
As I say, find you group of misfits and levitate together.
