VANS PRESENTS WAFFLEHEAD: SNEAKERS AS PERSONAL EXPRESSION TOOLS
Wafflehead by Vans. This is one of the many projects of the American brand and this time it involves you, us. All those who not only limit themselves to buying (and collecting) their iconic sneakers but adding something of their own. A color story, tags, geometric shapes. Customizing then becomes narrating a piece of self.
A subculture is born. Vans, in fact, invites collectors from all over the world to share their stories. Among these, the best known are Charlene Holy Bear, Henry Davies and Bill Cruz, founder of Under The Palms and self-proclaimed guru of the Vans sneaker collector community. Regarding the movement, he says: «We chose to go to the left when everyone else went to the right.» While the approval was rampant, these company fans decided to make the models they buy unique.
WAFFLEHEAD BY VANS: SHOES BETWEEN ART AND PASSION
«Our community of Vans collectors and personalizers is not composed of the usual sneaker enthusiasts,» says Erwin Federizo, Vans Global Executive Creative Director. «Unlike many sneaker lovers, Vans fans don’t care so much about keeping their shoes immaculate or keeping the collection behind protected windows. Instead, they prefer to consume them to the sole, paint them, find pairs used in flea markets. Their collections are the mirror of an authentic and individual style, of the aesthetic sense, of the love for our brand and for what it represents, that is tradition, bond with the subcultures and expression of the Ego.»
Wafflehead by Vans is entirely part of the spirit of Vans’ Off the Wall. Along these lines, Vans will host a series of Meet the Waffleheads events to celebrate Vans collectors and personalisers from around the world, with round tables, music and artifacts from creative cultures developed in the brand’s international communities. Starting this summer, Vans enthusiasts will be able to send images of their own collections or of their own Vans and try to win a trip that is fully paid to participate in one of these happenings, where they will exhibit their personal collections.
Vans will hold an event at the House of Vans in Chicago on November 16, 2019, while others will take place around the world. How to participate? Simply sign up on Vans Family and go to vans.com/waffleheads for more information on sharing your Waffleheads story.
