The store of the week: SHOPenauer presents Dover Street Market

For the column “SHOPenauer’s store of the week”, today we talk about Dover Street Market

Dover Street Market is a multi-brand retailer born on the homonymous Dover Street, in the Mayfair district of London. Over the years, its expansion has reached a global level and currently has stores in New York, Tokyo, Singapore, Beijing, Beijing and Los Angeles.

All this empire was born from the idea of Rei Kawakubo, designer and founder of the Japanese fashion label Comme des Garçons, and her husband Adrian Joffe. The store sells all the Comme des Garçons lines brand, combining high fashion brands with emerging and streetwear brands.

The first Dover Street Market was inaugurated on 10 September 2004 from 17 to 18 of the homonymous street, in Mayfair, London. In March 2016, the original store was moved to the former Burberry building (erected in 1912 by Thomas Burberry) on Haymarket (South Piccadilly).

Often described as a concept store, the store offers instead a different approach to retailing, pushing the boundaries of what this type of sales really should be.

The concept behind this project is in fact a new type of store that celebrates creativity, denigrates the comformity and ignores the established principles of retailing.

A place where streetwear clashes with luxury, young designers line up with world-famous icons, artists interfere in installations and designers are free to create their own spaces. All aiming to create a nice chaos.

In 2013, the London store was ranked by Complex as the second best store in the world.

DOVER STREET MARKET AROUND THE WORLD

Dover Street Market Ginza was inaugurated in 2006 in Tokyo.

Dover Street Market New York was inaugurated in December 2013 in Manhattan’s Murray Hill in the old building of the School of Applied Design in New York at 160 Lexington Avenue.

Dover Street Market Beijing, transformed into Dover Street Market in February 2018, previously a joint venture between I.T and Dover Street Market called I.T Beijing Market.

Dover Street Market Los Angeles opened in 2018 in the arts district.
