Who is Vanessa Beecroft? She is perhaps one of the most important contemporary artists and the greatest exponent of the tableu viveant, that is, to represent a scene as a living picture. He shaped performance art, the representation of the female body and socio-political discussions on art. His performances (titled VB, followed by the number) have been an ongoing practice for over twenty five years. Presented in some of the world’s most important museums and major contemporary events, Beecroft’s performances highlight the tensions between nudity and clothing, bond and freedom, collective and individual, human strength and weakness.
Vanessa Beecroft was one of the first artists to collaborate with fashion brands, starting in the 90s, and since 2009 she has collaborated extensively with the musician and producer Kanye West. She is also a passionate practitioner of photography, drawing, painting and sculpture, using every means to present perspectives on the body, while combining the influences of the Renaissance with modern representation. From 2019 he begins to collaborate with Moncler for the realization of a performance (“VB87”) dedicated to the opening of the new store in Galleria Vittorio Emanuele in Milan. The Italian artist, who lives in California, presented a host of models and dancers dressed in vintage Moncler jackets in homage to autobiographical memories that bind her to the brand, also telling her vision on the theme of identity, desire and fashion .
Like all of us, during the last few weeks Vanessa has continued to work from her home in Hollywood, from where she has told us what is inspiring and how her creative process has changed.
«The distance gave us a feeling of peace that before was difficult to experience, promoting calm and concentration. It is the natural rhythm of things that has now found its space, while we find ourselves stripped of all that is superfluous and unnecessary. Now I draw at a table in my bedroom, creating smaller images than in my studio and using a charcoal instead of oil paints, continuing to wonder what the future holds for each of us ».
