For the Fall/Winter 2019 fashion show, Gucci‘s creative director, Alessandro Michele, brought all his deep love for ancient and androgynous things adorned with extraordinary otherworldly masks on the catwalk.

But the star of the Kering group stable is not invincible.
Gucci in fact has now had to deal with the consequences of the sale of a black turtleneck sweater (here for the full article) that has outraged the civil rights supporters and has turned into a social cause on various social networks.
Many have declared a boycott: the rapper 50 Cent, with its 22 million followers on Instagram, has even burned his Gucci outfits and is now shaming other artists associated with the brand.

In fact, in all of this caos, Alessandro Michele’s autumn/winter 2019-20 collection was partly an explanation, or at least an exploration of the authentic “person” and the different masks we wear.
“I used the mask metaphor to explore clothing and what they say about us in real life”
His catwalk presented heavy crucifixes, three-piece suits, collars and masks with pointed studs: a sign of defense and an emblem of servility. “I try to stick to the rules and respect the rules, but I have a wild side, and I can be very aggressive when I want to express myself.”
However, he remains sorry for the sweater. “Fashion is politics, I try not to get involved, but the recent scandal, however, has helped the company to open its eyes and let the alternative opinion come in. From now on we will do things in a different way. change is here to stay. “

“The mask as a cut between visible and invisible”
And like any Gucci show, even in this one the main characters were the different faces. Most of the looks, including balloon pants, petticoats under ruffled lace shirts, and latex tears masks were very reminiscent of a clown’s clothes.

And under a kaleidoscope of lights and surrounded by mirrors, Alessandro Michele has also distributed some sneakers to convey a casual informality, combining them especially with elegant suits consisting of gilet and super wide ties.
Michele does not apologize for his vision. Nor for its wilder side. But as clarified later: the masks and collars will not be for sale.
