When we think of summer we imagine that long-awaited time of year when we can finally enjoy our holidays, have fun, travel and enjoy our well-deserved rest. But probably the most interesting aspect is the common need to reveal pale faces in the sun, abandon the heavy winter layers and give way to lightness and comfort. It is enough for me to say summer and comfort, that the reference to Birkenstock, the summer shoe par excellence, is immediately clear.
Since 1774 the German company has managed to impress its orthopedic-inspired footwear art all over the world, passing from ugly shoes that only a German tourist would dare to wear to the coolest and most indispensable accessory for a whole season. Of course, there are still those who cannot digest its aesthetic that is more functional than beautiful, evidently because they have never tried to walk on it for a whole day.
In that case anyone would convert, because when you try a Birkenstock you can’t do without it anymore. And to those skeptics, I’m sorry to say that they will have to get used to seeing them still around.
The historic company has in fact now understood how to speak to any generation, from the older to the younger, and appears increasingly willing to inaugurate the esthete with many surprising collaborations. The collaboration with avant-garde designer Rick Owens a few months ago is now followed by the new partnership with Jil Sander +.
“They contacted us and we immediately thought it could be a perfect addition to our Jil Sander + line for its outdoor character, for the environment and for the home … it fits perfectly into this universe of authenticity and honesty in products. “ Lucie Meier said.
Creative directors Lucie and Luke Meier reinterpret three iconic models: Arizona, Milan and Berlin, working on volumes and details without ever altering the distinctive design of the German brand. Therefore, the three models available in calfskin or suede in neutral shades of cream, olive green and black, overall reveal slightly larger straps and soles and thinner buckles.
But the fantastic trio is also joined by a fourth and new silhouette called “Velan” and inspired by the Berlin closed sandal. The shoe leaves the heel part uncovered, adopting a soft nappa strap to be tied around the ankle. The pre-launch of the collaboration between Birkenstock and Jil Sander + will take place on July 1st on their respective webstores, followed by a week after the global launch.
