The world goes on: Lady Gaga becomes the leading actress of the film A star is born, released today in Italian cinemas. Princess Eugene of England gets married and in Milan it rains. At the same time, and throughout the world, there is still the obscene practice of the social phenomenon of child brides. Act N° 1 has reflected on it for the spring-summer 2019 collection, following a personal knowledge of the case by Galib Gassanoff, founder together with Luca Lin of the brand, born in 2016 in Reggio Emilia.
Gali, originally from Georgia, has witnessed many child marriages within his Azerbaijani community. These visions – often silenced by the international media – have translated them into clothes, which are the spokesperson for those many (too many) young people unable to draw back, to refuse. The reasons why the tragedy persists are two: tradition – it is a custom typical of many countries – and the will of relatives. In particular, the United Nations Population Fund estimates that at least seventeen percent of girls in Georgia get married before the age of eighteen.
Fashion is synonymous with glamor, cocktail party, creativity, culture and is the mirror of society. Too bad that lately only the ways of dressing on the street of the z generation are reflected. In reality, as shown by the collection of Act N° 1 there would be more to tell. Indeed, if there is a claim to define fashion art and medium, then it is also meant to transmit important messages. Rhetoric is sometimes needed.
On the catwalk, during Milan Fashion Week, the winners of the 2017 edition of Who is on next? they bring ethnic-inspired pieces mixed with traditional elements of wedding dresses: street-style garments, from unstructured jeans to denim skirts, from t-shirts to hooded sweatshirts, are contaminated with some details taken from formal wear such as embroidered white tulle, pastel colors and white jacquard fabrics.
Luca and Galib, through their brand – inserted by the August 2108 issue of Vogue America among the eight new brands that are redesigning fashion as we know it today – put on stage an aesthetically accurate, glossy but deeply dramatic chronicle.
