February 14, the first thing that comes to mind on the morning of February 14 when we open our eyes, is to find out where our soulmate can be.
One of the classic images associated with the idea of a soul mate is the one shown in Plato’s Symposium, where the Greek philosopher proposes the immortal story of the perfect ‘apple’.
But let’s proceed in order. At one point in the work, Aristophanes took the floor, saying:
“Once men were perfect beings, they lacked nothing and there was no distinction between men and women. But Zeus, envious of this perfection, split them in two: since then each of us has been in constant search for his own half, finding which it returns to the ancient perfection “.
In a distant past, three different human genres lived, writes Plato: the ‘male’, originating from the Sun; the ‘female’, originating from the Earth and the ‘hermaphrodite’ from the Moon, since it assumes both the characteristics of the Sun and the Earth, living with reflected light
The hermaphrodites were complete beings, who had both male and female qualities: the shape of the body was rounded, they had four arms and four legs, a head with two faces, four ears and two different genital organs: perfect specimens of ‘superman’ , so to speak.
Their completeness made them feel even more powerful than the gods of Olympus, who for this reason decided to wage war on them.
But nothing can annihilate the divinities: the Giants have not succeeded, let alone human beings … Zeus, in council, decided to punish them, dividing them, like an apple, into two equal parts. Thus it was that the hermaphrodites lost their ‘perfection’, becoming simple men and women.
From that moment they lived in a miserable, excruciating condition, since they felt the unbearable and unsatisfactory lack of their old half.
Each ‘piece of the apple’ began to search for the part that once belonged to him and after finding it he rejoined it. The only purpose of these ‘missing apples’ was to be together again, nothing would be needed for food and work.
Many starved to death during the exhausting search, others for many different reasons: the human species was dying out. Zeus, therefore, moved by guilt, adopted a new device, giving ‘power’ to the genitals of both sexes; only in this way, the human race could have continued to populate the planet without risk of extinction.
We want to try to translate this splendid philosophical thought of Plato into our jargon, that of the Addict Sneakers, where the constant search for a soul mate will compare it to the search for the “perfect sneaker”, the one that, when you see it, your eyes shine, the one that when you touch it for the first time increases your heart rate, the one that makes you go crazy for it and the one that when you wear it for the first time, you would like not to take it off, the smell that you would recognize among a thousand perfumes and the one that when you see it paired in the box fills your heart with emotions.
Maybe we would never want to meet the perfect one, because after all we like to “fall in love” more often, we like to experience these emotions with each new model.
Perhaps Plato with his lightning did not just want to divide us, and make our search exhausting, perhaps he wanted to allow us to spend time in search of perfection that sooner or later will be revealed in front of our eyes, right behind a shop window, illuminated by neon lights and some advertising slogans.
