Michela Gattermayer is one of the guests of the Future Vintage Festival 2019. One of the most respected figures in fashion journalism. As Director or Deputy Director, Gattermayer has led glossy magazines such as Elle and Vanity Fair. With these premises, it is no wonder why a festival like this, now in its tenth edition entitled Be Dissident, wanted her among the protagonists. When? Michela, who are the dissidents today?
The dissidents today are the ones who finally take a position on everything that happens. Rather than dissent, they roll up their sleeves and act, protect the fragility of others, try to overcome the fear that seems to me to be the real problem today. With the consequent lack of hope. Here, perhaps the dissidents are the naive, those who still have an dream and fight for it.

In fashion, a field that you know very well, are there still designers who have the courage to put themselves on the other side of the fence?
I would say that in reality barricades no longer exist. Politicians build walls. Fashion shows the course of history, the walls have always knocked them down. I speak of course of our world, let’s call it, Western. There are still too many countries where women are forced to burka, just to give an example. There we would need the courage to snatch the clothes and free everything underneath. So, back to the question, when someone like Alessandro Michele became the designer of a company like Gucci and invoices what he invoices, I think there’s nothing else to say.
What does the Future Vintage Festival represent for you?
Future Vintage Festival is an excellent opportunity to show a little what happens beyond the usual channels. Above all, being in Italy, not in Milan. Then, since this is the first time I will participate, I am very curious to see everything with my own eyes.

FASHION AND SHOPPING: A NEW PARADIGM OF CONSUMERISM
In recent years we hear more and more often about recycling, “plastic free” movements and renewable energy. Can choosing to buy vintage garments be considered another way to take care of our planet?
In the meantime, you talk to someone who has been organizing competitions on the beaches for years: the first to win a bag filled with waste. Then I remain the terror of the swimmers wandering around to collect the cigarette butts (is it possible that there is still someone hiding them under the sand?) And everything I find. That said, plastic-free movement, recycling, renewable energies are now subjects that cannot be ignored. And even if for some it is just a fashion it doesn’t matter: everything is needed so that people are informed and become aware of the situation. And then if a company starts it is shown that the others also take care of the problem. It seems to me that current events are proving it. Of course, choosing vintage garments allows you not to accumulate waste and produce less. The subject is very complex because if less is produced, less is bought and spent and the less companies earn. There is a problem of basic education. Education not only of the consumer, even of the producer. We should all have the courage to step back and change direction.
VINTAGE, A PLEASANT FUN!
What relationship does Michela Gattermayer have with vintage and what are the designers to collect?
I buy vintage since I am a little girl so I love it. In reality it doesn’t make much sense to collect clothes because they don’t have much value. And who’s telling you this is someone who has hundreds, if not thousands, of pairs of jeans, shoes, glasses… I am a serial accumulator. Vintage serves as a game, to have fun, certainly not to make money. Then it is clear that maybe you make a deal by buying a piece a little and reselling it to more. But these are fortunes that happen once in a while. As for the market value of cult pieces like Vuitton trunks, Hermès bags, Chanel suits I understand that these are always classic names (even Valentino, Versace). Frankly I wouldn’t be a good advisor: I’ve always bought things that I like, to wear, I’ve never minded the value itself or thinking about a future.

Fashion has exploded, it’s everywhere. They all seem to have become very good. Above all there is really everything for everyone, maybe even too much. Everyone can dress as he likes and be perfectly in line with the times. Even if you are out of context, if you like it, that’s fine. I find it fantastic. I love the freedom that fashion gives to anyone. The future? If I knew I would become THE GURU. Frankly, I don’t know. And can I say? I don’t really care. I rather care about the work behind, the people who live in the factories to allow all this and all the others who are the gears of a giant machine. It is their future that must be guaranteed.
