For two days we are seeing on the web pictures of the new Supreme advertising campaign, with a series of posters depicting Morrissey wearing the iconic white t-shirt with the Supreme logo, which were affixed to the walls of Paris and New York.
In the past we have seen stars like Lady Gaga, Neil Young and Lou Reed in this type of campaigns announcing the imminent arrival of the new collection of the American brand.
One way used by Supreme, as usual, to tie its image with characters of great thickness of the music scene and, in general, of contemporary pop culture.
It seemed like a great choice as an anti-conventional stars like Morrissey, to carry the logo of the brand and introduce the new collection. All right then?
“I apologize enormously for the enfeebled photograph of me issued this week by Supreme. The shot was taken in October 2015. I considered the photograph to be fit only for a medical encyclopedia and I pleaded with Supreme not to use it. This was before I learned that Supreme were sponsored in part by the beef sandwich pharaoh known as White Castle. Supreme were issued with a legal caution not to use the photograph and their fee would be returned. Evidently Supreme have ignored my lawyer. No safety within the corridors of law. Ugh.
I offer excessive apologies for this association. Shame is indeed the name.”
To be honest Supreme is not currently sponsored by the brand, as the singer says, but in the past has worked with this company, not so much for the type of product being marketed, but for the iconic brand, as it has done in the past for many collaborations with other American brands.
Supreme responded by telling all that was done in an official statement. Which in summary reported this.
After contacting the singer and having proposed the shooting made by Teddy Richardson and showing him earlier the same mold campaigns, made by the same Richardson in order to highlight clearly the style that they wanted to get, Supreme has paid in full and in advance what was agreed and so he proceeded to carry out the shooting.
Once made, in the following days has been sent to Morrissey the photographs chosen for the campaign.
At this point , according to Supreme, the singer has banned the brand to make use of them. Indeed, Morrissey has insisted on using an other photo, made by himself (and therefore not by Terry Richardson) wearing a t-shirt Supreme. Image which was subsequently published by the nephew of Morrissey on Instagram, making it in fact, extremely unusable by Supreme, who then refused to go to this possibility.
In the end, Supreme, totally caught off guard, gave the singer a series of possibilities: a) re-make the shooting again at his own expense b) to select one of the different photographs accomplish during the shoting, c) in a last reatio, to return money and cancel everything.
Apparently at this time that it fell a silence on the part of Morrissey that he refused to cooperate to resolve the unpleasant situation of impasse citing the fact that Supreme had ‘spotted’ in collaboration with White Castle.
And that is why we decided to proceed according to Supreme programs and according to what was agreed: to publish the advertising campaign and even t-shirts and posters depicting Morrissey. That it seems, at this point, will become some of the most popular and desired products ever. They will certainly sold out within a few hours, and to this we are already accustomed, but will be accompanied by an aura of legend and a history of which, perhaps, has not yet been written the last chapter.
