In the summer of 2018, the experimental fashion brand Ksenia Schnaider caused a sensation with the Denim-denims model – jorts over jeans – worn by the Hadid sisters and other personalities. Today it introduces a novelty, the Asymmetrical jean, and is immediately a case involving media, and also concerning fashion understood as culture, an art having a precise meaning.
One leg wears a cigarette-shaped silhouette, while the other is wide. In essence – reporting the subtitle of an article published on Dazed and Confused about it – it is as if the various stylistic eras of denim were contained in a single product: the seventies, eighties and nineties all together. Is it really necessary to wear it? How far can you experiment with fashion? The first answer is very simple to give: no. Nobody is obliged to buy it. As for the second, it is a more refined reasoning – word used on purpose, as asymmetric to the topic in question: past years fashion, the one covering the whole of the twentieth century, is fortunate to have avant-garde creators who, more or less, investigate new forms to represent a certain garment, which is provided with precise codes. One of the last able to do this was Martin Margiela, with his deconstruction. And we can bet that for the Ukrainian brand, born in 2011, the designer is a source of inspiration.
The word novelty is not in vogue. There are exceptions and these jeans are, after years spent seeing shops in skinny jeans or models with bell-bottoms, ankle or long. However, they are not able to constitute real change, a new event in terms of style. To cut a long story short: they will not enter costume history books. At least that we do not consider them a summary of our times: the decades mixed and put on denim by Ksenia Schnaider, in fact, or are a provocation – as long as you talk about – or really intend to act as a manifesto of what today is the our post-liquid world, where everything mixes up without apparent rules and everyone is convinced that he is free to act and do what he wants. But fashion, for a few more, is serious and must be respected. If you have the ambition to change it you will fail if, instead, you are real creative and the only goal is to transmit your art the speech is different. Then you will really have another fashion revolution.
