Sofia Elias is Mexican, born in Guadalajara. After moving to Mexico City, she undertakes architecture studies but soon realizes that despite her love for the subject, the theoretical studio is unable to give her what she needs. From this interest in structure, form and aesthetics, the need arises in her to “translate” her personal visions into a concrete language. In 2019 Sofia gives life to Blobb, her designer costume jewelery brand, which perfectly embodies the fusion of architecture, sculpture, fashion and design.
Sofia said about the initial phase of her work on Blobb:
“When I started Blobb, about a year ago, I didn’t have the space to make life-size sculptures, so I decided to create smaller shapes, experimenting with different materials”
Initially it was not intended to become a commercial project: the jewels were made by Sofia for herself. Later, wearing them, people started asking for more information and from there it became clear that Sofia could make Blobb a commercial reality.
Play is a fundamental component of Blobb costume jewelery (these playful and creative shapes are in fact ‘reminiscences of childhood‘ for the artist) but it is not the only component within the concept. In addition to the hilarious dimension, sharing and care of the jewel are also fundamental.
This is why jewels are always sold in pairs, so that you always have someone to share them with, and why it is not possible to wash them under running water. In this way Blobb conveys a message: to take care of objects and our loved ones, with small gestures that manage to make a difference.
